Lying lifeless amongst the other bodies, Siah Swee Chuan's eyes were open. He was conscious of his surroundings but just did not have the strength or mind to get up. His mind was completely blank. Too tired to think of anything, what to do next, what had just happened. His family had been blown up into pieces, hi son was still missing, his home destroyed, he wondered why he had survived. He just wanted to lay unfound there forever.
The whole mess was still. Time froze. When a sudden shifting amongst the rubble broke the perfect silence, his neighbour's son emerged from the pieces of collasped ceiling.
The little boy noticed life in Swee Chuan's direction; he crawled over to him and called out,
" Swee Chuan Shu Shu! Swee Chuan Shu Shu!!", gently tugging his bloodied, flesh-exposed arm.
"No, just leave me." Swee Chuan thought to himself, shutting his eyes out, as though the boy were just a frail apparition that would fade away at will.
The Japanese Occupation lasted 3 years in Singapore from 1942 to 1945.Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost in Singapore alone."...Swee Chuan Shu Shu..."
"Come, let's get away before the Japanese come."
Even in the darkness, the child's robust eyes shone with indescribable, vivid hope, burning fiercely with youthful vigor and determination.
"Its hopeless..." But he felt his gore-stained, only able arm move on its own accord, shoving away stray bricks and debris, as though they were feathers and cotton.
It took about an hour, but soon they had both extricated themselves from the ruins. However, none of the other people were as lucky. buildings had been scarred by blood and gore, and crumbling facades dotted the landscape. All around the two males, humanity was screaming in agony, and the scattered living clutched their dead kin in their final moments.
Now that they were in the bloodstained daylight, Swee Chuan had a better view of his arm.
Or what was left of it. The pinkish stump had bits of tissue hanging from it, and flies were gathering to feast on the gangrenous flesh (yes, I want to gross you out) But that was the least of the young man's worries.
Suddenly, Japanese soldiers came, killed Swee Chuan, and then he shoved they boy into the nearest dustbin, where the boy stayed until the entire Japanese occupation was over, when the Japanese surrendered and British soldiers found him.
